Saving the Endangered Black Rhino

As part of a conservation initiative by The Aspinall Foundation, DHL recently transported three critically endangered black rhinos from the UK to the Kilimanjaro National Park in Tanzania. The rhinos were born in captivity at The Aspinall Foundation’s Port Lympne Wild Animal Park and were being moved as part of an initiative to reinforce the reintroduced population of eastern black rhinoceros in the Mkomazi Rhino Sanctuary, Tanzania, with the support of Tusk Trust, a dynamic conservation organization. Black rhino numbers have been significantly reduced due to large-scale poaching.

DHL’s very special cargo consisted of one male rhino, Monduli, and two females, Grumeti and Zawadi, which are now living in the wild for the first time. All precautions for safety and comfort were taken in the transport of the rhinos in a specially modified Boeing 757. In addition to lifesaving devices and temperature control, the aircraft also accommodated two rhino keepers from Port Lympne, two aircraft engineers, two aircraft loadmasters, and a specialist veterinarian.
